Understanding CyberBullying 

TEDxTeen Talk: Rethink Before You Type

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Have you ever done or said something and wished you could take it back? Cyberbullying is a bigger problem than you think. There is a solution. ReThink about it... Trisha Prabhu is a 14-year-old student at Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville, Illinois. From a young age, she has been fascinated with the inner workings of the brain. In 2013, Trisha heard about a young girl’s suicide due to bullying on the Internet and set out to find a long-term solution to cyber-bullying.

Cyberbullying Statistics

36.5% of people around the world have experienced some form of cyberbullying online in their lifetime, of which 82.6% of them chose to remain silent and 41.6% experienced social anxiety. In Singapore, 3 out of 4 youths had been bullied online. It is shocking that almost 2 in 3 of those being bullied went on to become bully themselves.

Be aware of the
digital environment

From the age of 12 to 22, she was consistently cyberbullied via text messages. On top of that she was threatened. These experiences led her to be in a constant state of fear from flashbacks as she was afraid that one day, the bully would appear and actually hurt her. As she reached adulthood, she shared her take on cyberbullying with hopes that her story will help improve the digital environment for youths.

A girl shared how one wrong move caused her to be a target of consistent cyber bullying which saw a barrage of mean posts and threats directed at her. Always think carefully before you post. Once you post it, you can never take it back.

  1. Tell the one who bullied you that you don’t like the way he/she treats you and ask him/her to stop

  2. Walk away from the person who is hurting you

  3. Ask a trusted adult for help

  4. Make friends with others and maintain a good friendship with others
